JENNY MILLER

I’ve always known what I wanted to be “when I grew up.” I wanted to create, entertain, inform, and teach. I wanted to be a storyteller, a producer, a writer, a leader. I wanted to take ideas and transform them into reality, specifically on a screen - big or small. When I was in elementary school, my idea of fun was writing scripts on loose leaf paper and forcing my friends to star in my “movies.” For me, thinking outside of the box is the only way to think, and there’s no such thing as too big of an imagination.

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in communications and a minor in digital studies. With both of these skill sets, I became a confident and creative writer, researcher, interviewer, and critical thinker. Upon graduation, I was already camera trained and familiar in operating various roles within a studio. I spent each summer in college as an intern at Viacom in the production, development, talent and casting departments. After graduating, I took on freelance production assistant jobs that only reaffirmed my passion for working in television. I learned how to think on my feet, solve problems before they happened, and be there for everyone and anyone around me, no matter what the need was.

I switched over from the fast paced live audience environment to an office job at a production company as the executive assistant to the president, co-founder and executive producer of Left Right Productions. This job was a front row seat to the entire industry, and I absorbed everything I possibly could. Aside from the administrative duties that came with this role, I was reading scripts and pitch decks, creating one-sheets and casting reels, watching pilots, reading the producer’s notes, studying how each cut differed from the next, and assisting with various projects in development and production. I participated in meetings with major networks, showrunners, developers, writers, and talent. I eventually became a casting assistant where I was researching, casting, conducting interviews, and booking subjects for docuseries in development. While my time at Left Right was incredibly valuable, I was itching for the opportunity to work on my own projects from start to finish. Taking on a job in the digital world was the perfect next step to allow me to do this.

I worked at Yahoo Lifestyle and Entertainment for 2 years. As a development coordinator, I was responsible for creating short form video content for all of Verizon Media’s brands. I oversaw the Youtube Channel for Yahoo Lifestyle where I created 5 original series in the beauty, commerce, and wellness space. Within months, I became a producer on the Lifestyle team where I pitched ideas and executed them, all within a week’s timespan. I was responsible for creating original formats, pitching new ideas, booking prospective talent, planning and managing the studio shoot and working directly with the editors in post.

The pandemic hit, making our shoots completely virtual and our formats strictly interview-style, but I found myself becoming the storyteller I always wanted to be, and the journalist I never knew I could be. I began producing videos for on-net, and writing the articles for each piece as well. My work ranges from human interest exposés to expert interviews to news stories and more. Everyday I was connecting with interesting people across the globe, learning new diverse perspectives, and sharing them with our readers and viewers. I searched for stories that I felt deserved to be shared, and took great pride in elevating the voices of those who otherwise would have not been heard. I created a series for Yahoo Life, called Spread the Good, which highlighted individuals or groups of people making a positive impact on the world or their community. Not only was I publishing videos on-net, but I also worked with the social team to produce, plan and program content for our social media sites. I became AR/XR trained and learned how to use these video elements to take our current stories to the next level.
